Eight years ago, Luisa Maffi and Ellen Woodley published their landmark book, Biocultural Diversity Conservation: A Global Sourcebook. It brought together for the first time stories from around the world of people working to sustain cultures and biodiversity together, in an integrated way. Many were working down at the grassroots. Because so often these stories don’t get wide publicity, it can sometimes feel, to community diversity activists, that they are alone in their efforts. The Sourcebook provided ample and inspiring evidence to the contrary.
In the next issue of Langscape Magazine, which I have the honor of guest editing, we will bring readers a whole new set of perspectives on community-level biocultural diversity conservation. All over the globe, people are taking charge of identifying, recording, promoting, and protecting the biocultural fabric that makes their local communities unique.
Maybe you are one of them! If so, you have a story worth telling, and we’d like to invite you to consider submitting a proposal to contribute to “Biocultural Diversity Conservation: Communities at the Cutting Edge.” You do this by first sending us an abstract for consideration; from those proposals, we then select some to invite to submit a full article. As guest editor, I work with those submissions to help focus and refine them for publication. While we can’t promise to be able to accept every proposal, we can assure that each one will be carefully considered and personally responded to. You can propose:
In your abstract, please try to address the following questions:
If you’d like to be considered as a possible contributor to this community-focused issue, we want to hear from you!
Contributions to Langscape Magazine may take different forms, either text-driven or artwork-driven (such as photo essays, video essays, or other visual art). See this page for instructions on how to submit an abstract. The deadline is February 11.
With warm regards,
