Re-Storying Biocultural Diversity: Wisdom from Young Indigenous Leaders
In 2019, Terralingua started a special initiative, the Indigenous Youth Storytellers Circle (IYSC). The aim of the IYSC was to provide a venue in which young Indigenous people could share their gift of stories. An official project affiliated with the UN’s International Year of Indigenous Languages (IYIL 2019), the IYSC seeks to support these upcoming Indigenous leaders in their efforts to both restore and re-story their diverse biocultural heritage.
Young Indigenous people from around the world answered our call for stories. They shared videos, photos, artwork, and narratives about how they are reaffirming their cultural identities; reconnecting to their ancestral languages, traditional knowledge and practices, values, and ways of life; and reclaiming ancestral links with the land.
In their stories, they showed us that young Indigenous people are taking the lead in showing ways to live respectfully on Earth. Their languages, cultures, and homelands bear the wisdom of generations of ancestors — and these young Indigenous leaders are stepping up to carry that wisdom forward, not just in their own communities but for the benefit of people everywhere. Their experiences are priceless gifts full of much-needed inspiration for the rest of the world.
This special issue of Langscape Magazine is 160 pages, ad-free, and full colour. Most of its stories were drawn from the Indigenous Youth Storytellers Circle, a Terralingua project developed as a contribution to the United Nations International Year of Indigenous Languages. It’s a beautiful and unique issue that is sure to be a collectors’ item. Some are already calling it a coffee-table book!
