Re-Storying Biocultural Diversity:
Wisdom from Young Indigenous Leaders

Volume 8, Special Issue, Summer/Winter 2019 in the northern hemisphere

.

All across the world, young Indigenous people are taking the lead in showing ways to live respectfully on Earth. Their languages, cultures, and homelands bear the wisdom of generations of ancestors — and these young Indigenous leaders are stepping up to carry that wisdom forward, not just in their own communities but for the benefit of people everywhere. Their experiences are priceless gifts full of much-needed inspiration for the rest of the world.

In 2019, Terralingua started a special initiative, the Indigenous Youth Storytellers Circle (IYSC), to provide a venue in which these talented youth could share their gift of stories. An official project that was affiliated with the UN’s International Year of Indigenous Languages (IYIL 2019), the IYSC seeks to support these upcoming Indigenous leaders in their efforts to both restore and re-story their diverse biocultural heritage.

We put out a worldwide call to young Indigenous people to tell us about how they are reaffirming their cultural identities; reconnecting to their ancestral languages, traditional knowledge and practices, values, and ways of life; and reclaiming ancestral links with the land. Throughout the year, we gathered Indigenous youth stories in the form of writings, videos, and other media and posted them online, both here on this page and on the reading platform Medium.

We’ve now published these stories in a special double issue of Langscape Magazine, along with a selection of other stories by Indigenous young people that had appeared in previous issues of the magazine.

It’s time to listen to the many voices of Indigenous youth!
