Indigenous and Traditional Peoples in the World’s Terrestrial Ecoregions

WWF International, Terralingua, and UNEP, 2000

This map is a companion to the WWF-Terralingua report Indigenous and Traditional Peoples of the World and Ecoregion Conservation: An Integrated Approach to Conserving the World’s Biological and Cultural Diversity.

The map overlays the locations of the world’s ethnolinguistic groups (represented by the locations of the world’s languages) onto the WWF map of the world’s ecoregions. This cross-mapping showed for the very first time the significant overlap that exists between the global geographic distribution of biodiversity and that of linguistic diversity (as a proxy for cultural diversity).

This full-color poster, along with the report, makes for a useful tool for anyone interested in learning or teaching about the interconnected diversity of life in nature and culture.
